Heather Carl

I first learned about Midwifery care while living abroad, working as an Au Pair in Cologne, Germany. Midwives are well integrated into the healthcare system in Europe, and the vast majority of low-risk births are attended by Midwives.

I spent several months shadowing a solo Midwife in Cologne while applying to various Midwifery education programs across Germany. My elation at being accepted to The Charité, Berlin (Europe’s largest University clinic) was short-lived when I found out that I could not be approved for the necessary work permits, due to my lack of European citizenship.

While this turn of events felt devastating at the time, I realize now that it has all been a necessary part of my journey.

Upon my return to Canada, I started working full-time as a Doula to gain more experience supporting pregnant persons and their families. During this time I also studied and obtained the necessary upgrades to apply to the BMid program at MRU. I was very lucky to be invited to an interview and be accepted into the program my first year applying.

My practical placements have been diverse, and have instilled a profound appreciation for just how precious pregnancy, childbirth, and the transition into parenthood is. I feel privileged to have a career in which families invite me into their lives and trust me to support them during this very special time.

In my spare time I like to be active. Whether it’s doing yoga, jogging on the river, playing squash with a friend, or simply strolling through cute shops downtown (yes, I consider that a sport!), I find that quality time spent in my body gives my mind a welcome rest from life’s everyday stressors.

Thank you for welcoming me, people of Edmonton! I look forward to getting to know you all better :)
