Birthing at Lucina

We strive to make your birthing experience as comfortable, intimate, and joyful as possible. Our birth rooms have queen-sized beds, spacious birthing tubs and ensuite bathrooms. Birth rooms are also equipped with variable lighting, climate control, and a variety of birthing aids from birthing stools to Entonox Gas.  Friends, family, doulas, and photographers are welcome to attend your birth.

Medical equipment is available at the Birth Centre to deal with complications in the same manner as a midwife-attended home birth. There are no obstetricians, pediatricians or anesthesiologists on staff.  If the need for additional pain relief or medical intervention arises, your midwife will arrange a transfer into hospital.  The Lucina Centre is located in close proximity to the Misericordia Hospital allowing for efficient transfer times. However, transfer location may be determined by your midwife’s privileging status and/or EMS dispatch.

After the birth, a delicious meal will be served to mom and her birth partner to replenish energy and allow quiet time for nursing and celebration.  If you miss out on your birth meal due to transfer, you will be invited to come enjoy a breakfast here at the Lucina Centre with your birth partner and baby at a later date.
